After months of anticipation of the local eatery to replace our beloved Splendid Foods space next to the Water and Ice Store, we happily dined on GMO-free, local, organic fare by Delicious Nutritious (Denu) Cafe. Delicious and nutritious indeed! Co-owner Atom is a chef previously linked to certified organic, gluten-free restaurants in California. While his partner, Sahar (originally from Iran, and raised in Sweden), had a vision for sharing their delicious and nutritious creations with Fountain Hills residents.
Today was Denu’s grand opening, and word quickly spread around town. We started with the blueberry smoothie made with cashew milk. It is divinely smooth with a hint of cinnamon. Their offerings today consisted of creamy potato leek soup ($8), kale, pomegranate, and walnut salad ($10) and portabello mushroom nori wrap ($12). We ordered a half order of everything for $14. Flavors were very clean and fresh. Denu is currently 80% organic, sourcing from local farmers including McClendon Farms.
They will be adding new items to the menu daily largely depending on what is in season. Tomorrow they will be offering a roasted cauliflower eggplant casserole, lemon cucumber stuffed with cashew cheese, and stuffed cabbage. What to expect in the future? Expect to find arepas (a corn-based flatbread often served as a sandwich) on the menu, a testament to Atom’s Columbian heritage. As well as Persian dishes like ash reshteh (a thick winter stew made with beans, spinach, mint, dill, and cilantro).
Be sure to stop in to welcome new residents Atom and Sahar to Fountain Hills, and taste some of their delicious and nutritious food! Stay tuned for an interview with the new owners!
